Driving Tips for San Juan

Once you pick up your car rental in San Juan, your Puerto Rican adventure begins. Keep these tips in mind for a smooth journey:

  • Toll Roads: Puerto Rico has several toll roads, including Highway 5 and Highway 17, which are paid with the Autoexpreso. Ask about our prepaid toll program to make your life easier.
  • Road Conditions: Most roads are paved, but you will need to watch out for frequent potholes. Some roads in rural areas are dirt or gravel and quite narrow, so drive carefully.
  • Rush Hour: The San Juan area is known for traffic congestion in the early morning and late afternoon/evening. Avoid roads like Highway 1 and Highway 17 at this time.
  • Road Signs: While the road signs are universal, most of them will be in Spanish, so be sure to familiarize yourself with the visuals or some simple Spanish words.

These along with our other tips for driving in Puerto Rico will help you have a stress-free experience.

Shackim helped me complete the pickup process for our rental in Carolina. He was very knowledgeable and explained everything clearly. The vehicle exceeded our expectations and helped make our vacation great. All the employees, including the shuttle driver, were all professional and very nice. Highly recommend.

I picked up a rental at BQN in February 2025. The initial interaction was somewhat difficult as the agent demanded I provide my insurance declaration when I refused their insurance as I have two policies. She seemed agitated that I could not provide the document and instead showed her my insurance coverage on my cell phone. When I got to the vehicle, it was dirty, missing both front hubcaps, the car was covered in sand throughout the inside, the seats were smelly and stained, pretty disgusting. I received an email from the general manager Christopher Torres, asking about the rental. I shared how disappointed I was in the vehicle's condition (37,700 miles on a Nissan Versa) via email. The next morning I received a call that someone would bring me a replacement vehicle. The replacement arrived as was stated, a brand new (250 miles only) equivalent vehicle the next morning. I appreciated the follow up email and the replacement made by Sixt, I would certainly rent from them again.
